Coats of Arms of the Diocesan Bishops of the Dioceses in the Ecclesiastical Province of Newark, New Jersey The ecclesiastical areas of jurisdiction under the authority of a bishop are called dioceses. These dioceses are grouped together under the titular authority of a Metropolitan Archbishop who heads an archdiocese. Such a grouping is referred to as a province and it derives its name from the see city of the metropolitan. In the province of Newark there are four suffrgan dioceses: Trenton, Camden, Paterson and Metuchen. The provincial boundary is coterminus with the boundaries of the civil state of New Jersey in the United States of America. |
