Coats of Arms of Modern Popes

This section depicts the coats of arms of several Popes of the modern era. In addition, the first few examples, concerning the arms of Pope Benedict XVI, illustrate how heraldic designs do not have to be slavishly copied. Rather, different artists will render the same coat of arms in different ways depending on their own style. The science of heraldry may dictate that the elements of the design be repeated in a particular way over and over. The art of heraldry allows great freedom and variety of expression.

This coat of arms depicts the heraldic emblems used by the Holy See as well as the Vatican City-State. It shows the papal tiara (or triregno) surmounting the crossed keys of St. Peter. These keys (mentioned in Matthew's gospel) represent the power to bind and to loose given to St. Peter and the other apostles by Christ.

Coat of Arms of Pope Benedict XVI (version in official use)

Designed by Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo, Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls. It incorporates two symbols from the arms of the Pope's former diocese of Munich-Freising. (The bear and the moor's head) It also uses the escallop shell that the Pope chose as part of his coat of arms when made a bishop. They have been re-arranged on the shield. The correct emblem of the Papal office (the tiara) has been erroneously discarded here in favor of a mitre that still suggests the three crowns. As another innovation the pallium is included. A rather pathetic attempt at communicating ecclesiology in pictorial form. That is not the function of heraldry.

Depicted in the traditional form as well as another version done which incorporates the innovations introduced by Montezemolo but with far superior artistry. These were done by the excellent heraldic artist Marco Foppoli.

The tiara still surmounts the papal arms in the Vatican gardens. Despite the best efforts of artists who indulge their whims it is still correct to ensign the Pope's arms with the tiara. It can be and obviously is done.
